Germany

When you think of Germany, one of the first things that might come to your mind is its extensive and efficient railway system. Unfortunately, though, in its current state, German trains do not always reflect the stereotypical German efficiency. In the last two decades, while passenger numbers were on the rise, not enough money was invested in maintaining the infrastructure. Thus, while the network is extensive, with lots of travel options, and while Germany has some of Europe’s fastest trains, train delays have become noticeably more common.

Deutschlandticket

The Deutschlandticket costs €49 / month, and it is valid for all local and regional public transport. However, it is NOT valid for long-distance services (IC, ICE, NJ, RJ and those RE trains that are operated by DB Fernverkehr AG). If this sounds confusing, don’t worry, even Germans are having a hard time understanding all the validity rules. To make it somewhat clearer, here is an overview of all lines where the Deutschlandticket can be used.

What this means, is that if you are only travelling shorter distances at a time, or if speed does not matter, you can basically travel all around Germany with a Deutschlandticket.
